Eleven years after the Grey darkened the sky, Méridienne Station, an old observatory and civil-defence shelter cut into an Alpine summit, still keeps 143 people alive: a turbine on an underground stream, a hydroponic Garden under pink lamps, a Council, a Charter, and every morning, chalked on the Board, the number of days left.
Tonight the Board says sixty-four days of food. The turbine's bearing sings a little higher every day. The Lower Deck, who run the machines, eat less than the Founders who run the Council. And in the grey rain, thirty-one survivors from the coast knock on the blast door: nine children, a nurse, an old machinist, a sick man, and a young woman who flinches at the sound of sledge bells.
The Council votes tomorrow at noon. Three weeks from now the thaw will open the pass. In between, decide who eats, who comes in and who decides, deal with a rival community that owns the valley's only lights, and live with what you chose: here, every decision comes back. A long sandbox of community, survival and conscience, for one hero or a group.
