Port Calloway, October 1947. The fog comes in off the bay every night, the bell on Pier 9 rings every thirty seconds until dawn, and the city runs on favours. On Tuesday morning the police pull a body from under Pier 9 and close the case by lunchtime: Danny Royce, a quiet clerk at the Harbor Commission, drowned.
On Tuesday night a woman in grey climbs four flights of stairs to a detective's office on Garnet Street, where the rent is two months late, and pays a hundred dollars to find her younger brother. The police say he's dead. She says he isn't. She is lying about something, and she is not the only one.
A noir investigation in two days and two nights for a lone private eye or a group (the detective, the beat cop, the singer, the struck-off doctor): follow the clues, pin them to the board, catch the liars, and decide what the truth is worth when you finally hold it in your hands.
