The storm closed the pass an hour after you reached Hollow Pines, a mountain town of four hundred souls, one gas station and an inn that looks lifted off a Christmas card. The roads will be shut for at least three days. Phones are patchy, the power keeps flickering, and the radio says the worst snow in fifty years is still coming.
Nobody seems to mind. The innkeeper has put fresh quilts on your bed and saved you the best seat by the fire. The sheriff stopped by to make sure you're comfortable. A woman from the church brought pie. Everyone remembers your name, and everyone is so glad you're here.
It's just the little things. The way the townsfolk stop talking when you walk in. The children's skipping rhyme about a Guest. The old guest book in the lobby, its first entry dated 1926 — and the way the room goes quiet when you sign it. Stay warm. Stay polite. And whatever you do, don't go into the woods after dark… unless you have to.
